Allergy Tips

Follow these simple recommendations for patients with allergies, they will help you improve your quality of life. And above all, avoid self-medication, antihistamines or corticosteroids should always be prescribed by a doctor.

BEDROOM

Wash sheets, pillowcases, pillows, mattress covers, duvets, and curtains in hot water at least once a week.

Vacuum mattresses to keep them free of dust and mites.

Avoid bedding based on wool or feathers, you can replace them with synthetic materials or cotton-based materials.

Remove rugs and rugs that accumulate dust

Use curtains that are washable, if you have horizontal blinds you can replace them with roller blinds that are easier to wash or vacuum.

Close the windows during the spring or in seasons with a lot of dust or pollen, turn on the air conditioning but clean the filters regularly, make sure to always keep the windows free of dust and mold.

Avoid upholstered furniture and choose some that are made of wood or that are easy to clean.

Remove items that collect dust, such as table decorations, magazines, toys, and stuffed animals, or store them in plastic containers.

Keep pets out of the bedroom and bathe them regularly, if they shed too much hair you can vacuum.


HALL

Remove carpets and rugs from the room or vacuum at least 2 times a week.

Avoid upholstered furniture and choose ones that are easy to clean

If you can't find a new space for your plants, you can place aquarium gravel over the soil to help control dust and mold.


KITCHEN

Install and use an exhaust fan or ventilation system to remove cooking vapors and reduce humidity in the environment. Most range hoods filter out particulates but do not release them to the open air.

Wash dishes daily and prevent them from accumulating, clean the sink and faucet to remove mold and food debris.

Clean your refrigerator at least once a week. Throw away food that is out of date or moldy.

Clean cabinets with detergent and water, check the spaces under the sink and check the plumbing for leaks, store food including pet food in closed containers.

Put kitchen trash in containers with lids and empty them every day.


BATHROOM

Install an exhaust fan to reduce humidity while you bathe.

Use tile floors that can be easily washed at least once a week

Place a mat that is washable at home.

Do not use wallpaper on the walls, replace it with easy-to-wash tiles or preferably anti-mold paint.

Clean moldy showers and faucets with bleach, clean or replace moldy curtains or rugs.

Clean and disinfect the toilet every day.


THE WHOLE HOUSE

Hot, humid homes are ideal environments for the proliferation of mites, dust, and mold. Keep the house well ventilated at a temperature between 20ºC to 22ºC and wash or clean the air conditioning filters once a month

Keep your house free of pests such as flies, mosquitoes, cockroaches and mice. To prevent a new infestation close the cracks and possible entrances of pests.

Close doors and windows when the weather is very hot and use air conditioning and dehumidifiers, eliminate non-washable materials such as carpets and rugs. Wash washable materials with a 5% bleach solution (1 liter of water + 5 ml of bleach) and wear a face mask when cleaning.

Before the rainy season it is recommended to waterproof the roofs to avoid leaks and humidity inside the house.

Use a vacuum with a small particle filter or a high-efficiency particulate air filter.

Do not allow smoking inside the house.


GENERAL MEASURES

Avoid contact with pollen, when leaving home use glasses to protect your eyes from direct contact with dust or pollen.

Ventilate the house at mid-morning between 5 and 10 minutes. Avoid doing them very early in the morning or very late because pollen levels are concentrated in the environment.

When cleaning the house, do not use brooms or feather dusters to avoid dust in suspension, better do it with a vacuum cleaner or a damp handkerchief.

When making the bed, avoid shaking the sheets, just stretch them out so as not to release dust.

Do not put stuffed animals or books on bedroom shelves.

Clean or replace vacuum filters regularly

Clean the fungus from the walls, specifically those in the bathrooms where the greatest amount of humidity is concentrated.

If you suffer from very acute respiratory allergies, avoid doing outdoor sports activities specifically during spring.

Vacuum the mats and carpets in the car at least once a week, clean the grilles and the air conditioning filter. Stay with the windows closed during the spring.

If you were in contact with a lot of pollen or pet hair on the street, change your clothes when you get home, wash your hands and face.

If the allergic reaction is severe, bathe and wash your hair to avoid discomfort during the night.
